The jam (fruit preserves) sandwich has long been a staple lunch item or snack food. It can made with just jam, or other food items can be added to change both texture and flavour.
There is nothing better than to start the day with a lovely breakfast made with love. I like to treat my husband to breakfast in bed not only for Valentine’s Day but any day of the year and he loves the surprise of getting a beautiful tray with tasty bites before he goes to work.

This year I decided to make strawberry jam sandwich hearts made with freshly made crunchy peanut butter, slices of fresh Florida strawberries and homemade strawberry jam I made a few days ago.

Simple jam sandwich:

2 slices bread per sandwich
Jam or preserves of choice
Afternoon tea jam sandwich:

Sandwich slices, plain bread without seeds etc.
Jam or preserves of choice
Grilled jam and cream cheese sandwich:

4 slices of sandwich bread
1/3 cup cream cheese
1/4 cup strawberry jam or preserves
2 tablespoons butter, unsalted, room temperature
Nut butter and jam sandwich:

2 slices sandwich bread
Nut butter of choice (peanut, cashew, almond, etc.)
Jam and preserves of choice

Lightly beat together the egg, caster sugar and vanilla essence in a shallow dish and set aside.
Spread the jam on to one slice of the bread and then place the other slice on top, pressing together firmly.
Melt the butter in a large skillet over a medium-low heat.
Soak the sandwich in the egg mixture until all of the egg has been absorbed.
Fry in the butter for 1-2 minutes each side until golden brown.
Slice the sandwich in half and sprinkle with the extra caster sugar.
You may serve with a scoop of ice cream, yoghurt or a dollop of whipped cream or all by itself.
